KWED Kiddie Parade slated for downtown Seguin this Saturday
(Seguin) – The youngest of residents will have their patriotic pride on display during this year’s Freedom Fiesta Kiddie Parade.
Families are encouraged to grab their Fourth of July décor and enter their child in this year’s evening parade. The parade is hosted by the Guadalupe County Republican Women and is held in conjunction with Seguin Radio KWED’s annual Freedom Fiesta in downtown Seguin. The Kiddie Parade will again kick off the annual celebration beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 2.
Kelly Follis, the coordinator for the event, says leading the kids around Central Park will again be Seguin’s very own Uncle Sam, a.k.a. Texas State Representative John Kuempel.
“We had been hosting the Kiddie Parade for many many years. We are very happy to be back. It’s such a patriotic event. It’s not a political event. It’s all about celebrating America. It’s about getting out and showing our patriotism and it really warms your heart to see kids and their families out just really celebrating our country and honoring those who made it possible. They are just so cute. It’s so much fun to see them,” said Follis.
Follis says although the parade is about participation, there are a few small prizes awarded for the top entries in the various categories. She says not only is it simple to enter but it’s free.
“It’s a very difficult job to select the most patriotic of the walkers (strollers), or riders (scooter, bikes) or motorized riders. WE have three categories. They pick the top two patriotic in those three categories and it’s a very difficult job because there is a lot of great entries to choose from,” said Follis.
Follis says luckily for her, she won’t have the difficult job of selecting this year’s winners.
“Judging our event this year are State District Judge Heather Wright. Then we have our County Treasurer Linda Douglass, and we have our District Clerk Linda Balk. Those ladies will be tasked with trying to figure out the two most patriotic entries. Anything goes, wagons, strollers, scooters whatever people want to do but we are happy to have everybody, and those ladies have a tough job of figuring out who is the most patriotic because there is a lot of patriotic folks in our county and we are very glad to see that,” said Follis.
Freedom Fiesta this year will welcome back a slate of food trucks and non-profit food booths. It will also feature Austin’s 11-piece variety band Jumpstart.
This year’s Freedom Fiesta is free. The event will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday in Central Park.
