(Richardson) – Texas Lutheran baseball lost to No. 23 University of Texas-Dallas, 5-4, on a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning in non-conference action on Tuesday at UTD Baseball Field.
The Bulldogs (26-11, 15-3 SCAC) had four different Bulldogs drive in runs and had a total of eight hits in the game.
In what equated to a staff game, Jonathan Hampton would spend the most time on the mound for TLU pitching three and one-third innings allowing two runs on six hits. Both home runs came via solo home runs in the seventh inning.
Randy Huerta went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk, and two runs scored.
The Bulldogs took an early 1-0 lead when Randy Huerta hit a solo home run in the first inning. Texas Lutheran would double their lead in the second inning as a sacrifice fly from Aric Vasquez scored Tyler Post.
The Bulldogs would add two more runs in the fifth from a sacrifice bunt from Alec Sanchez and an RBI single from Joe Jimenez to bring the Bulldogs lead to 4-0 entering the bottom of the fifth.
That is where the lead would stay until a seventh inning rally from the Comets that saw them tie the game behind two solo home runs and a two-RBI double.
UT-Dallas registered two singles in the bottom of the ninth, but the Bulldogs were able to get to two outs and almost got out of the inning – working to their last strike – before a pinch-hit RBI single to left field brought the game to its end.
The Bulldogs will look to rebound this weekend as they welcome the Schreiner University Mountaineers to Katt-Isbel Field for their final regular season series before the 2022 SCAC Championship Baseball Tournament next week in Cleburne.
The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday against the Mountaineers. All streaming and live stats links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.
