Seguin, Navarro, Marion baseball/ softball recaps, March 22

Seguin baseball rally falls short in district loss to Buda-Johnson
(Seguin) – Seguin was on the brink of being run-ruled by Buda-Johnson in Tuesday’s District 26-5A baseball game at ‘Smokey’ Joe Williams, but the Matadors rallied to make it competitive in the late innings before falling 14-10.

Seguin was down to its final out in the bottom of the fifth, trailing 11-1 with two down and the bases empty. The Matadors refused to go down without a fight and erupted for six runs to make it 11-7.

Tim Belicek extended the game with a base hit. Drew Burnett followed with a single. Cory Mazzurana drove in both runners with a double. Nick Carmona walked, and Eddie Homan doubled in Mazzurana’s courtesy runner Jeremiah Herrera and Carmona. Seth Cevallos reached on an error and eventually scored on an error.

The Jaguars responded with three runs in the top of the sixth, and the Matadors matched that total in the bottom half. Holt Haas walked to lead off, Burnett singled, and Mazzurana walked. Carmona scored Haas with an RBI groundout, Homan singled in Burnett, and Cevallos drove in Mazzurana’s runner Herrera with a base hit.

Seguin reliever Landon Trost worked around a leadoff single to keep Johnson scoreless in the top of the seventh and his team within striking distance, but the Matadors went down in order in the final frame.

“Hats off to them, because I love the fight that they had,” Seguin head coach Dusty Brittain said. “You know, obviously the blunders and making mistakes early to get ourselves in that hole, but that team (Johnson) is 5-0 and undefeated in district, and we just put up a 10-spot on them. So that’s the message to the kids. We’re capable. If we just put it all together and keep fighting, good things are going to happen.”

Johnson (13-4-1, 5-0) built a 10-0 lead before the Matadors finally broke through in the fourth when Burnett went all the way to third on a dropped fly ball and scored on Carmona’s RBI single.

The Jaguars scored five unearned runs with help from eight Seguin errors.

Mazzurana, Carmona, and Homan each finished with two RBIs. Homan and Burnett each went 2-4, and Burnett scored three times. Belicek went 2-5 with a run scored. Cevallos notched a hit, a run, and an RBI.

Trost pitched two scoreless innings in relief. Johnson starter Clark Scallon kept the Matadors scoreless over the first three innings, but Seguin did some damage against the Jaguars’ bullpen.

The loss drops Seguin to 1-3 in District 26-5A, 7-8 overall. The Matadors hit the road for a district game against New Braunfels-Canyon on Friday at 7 p.m.
