Marion girls’ season ends in bi-district loss to Lago Vista
(Buda) – Marion’s return to the girls basketball playoffs after a one-year absence only lasted one game as Lago Vista eliminated the Bulldogs 60-26 in the 3A bi-district bracket on Tuesday at Hays High School.
The game was competitive for a quarter, with Marion leading 6-5 at the end of a defensively dominated first period.
Lago Vista went to a full court press in the second quarter, opened the frame with seven straight points, converted a flury of Marion turnovers into transition buckets to win the period 23-5, and took a 28-11 cushion into halftime.
The Vikings outscored the Bulldogs 22-8 in the third period to put the game away.
Marion’s Sarah Cook led all scorers with 16 points. Kaelyn Taylor added three, Signe Rabenaldt, A.J. Jones, and Breelon Allen two apiece, and Jaslyne Williams one.
Sarah Long led three Lago Vista players in double figures with 14 points. Avery Rague and Amelia Robinson chipped in with 11 and 10, respectively.
After finishing in a three-way tie for second place in District 26-3A and ending up with the fourth playoff seed, Marion’s final record in Cassie Garza’s first season as head coach is 13-20.
Marion boys cap regular season with home win over Randolph
(Marion) – Marion boys basketball wrapped up the District 26-3A regular seaosn with a 44-31 home win over Randolph on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs (26-7) went 11-3 in district play to finish tied with Stockdale for second place, and the teams split their head-to-head meetings. The tiebreak procedure for playoff seeding had yet to be announced at press time.
Ryken Autry led all scorers with 18 points against Randolph and also pulled down seven rebounds.
Kadeem Blyden notched an 11-point, 13-rebound double-double and dominated defensively with six blocks.
Fernando Romero contributed eight points and a team-high three steals.
Lane Pawelek collected three points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Jon Padron and Richard Rayos rounded out the scoring wiht two points apiece.
Marion led a tight game 12-9 at the end of the first quarter and 21-19 at halftime. The Bulldogs used a 12-3 run in the third period to take a 33-22 cushion into the fourth and extended the margin to 13 in the final period.
Seguin boys end hoops season with dominant home win
(Seguin) – Seguin finished a disappointing boys basketball season on a positive note Tuesday night with a 79-40 blowout of Kyle-Lehman at Goldie Harris Gym.
Sophomore guard John Jackson poured in 27 points to lead four Matadors in double figures.
Devin Matthews chipped in with 13, Kevon Williams 12, and Jakyari Matthews 11. R-Teston Tucy and John Jones each netted six points, Matthew Martinez three, and Nate Enriquez one.
Seguin set the tone early, jumping out to a 21-6 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Mats led 40-19 at halftime and used a 24-9 run in the third quarter to take a 64-28 margin into the fourth.
The Matadors went 4-12 in District 26-5A to finish with a final season record of 11-22.
Seguin softball opens season, district slate with road win over Patriots
(San Antonio) – Seguin pounded and 19 hits and had five players record at three hits apiece to open the 2022 softball season and District 26-5A schedule with a 15-8 road win over San Antoni-Veterans Memorial on Tuesday.
The Matadors trailed 5-0 in the middle of the first inning and 8-1 in the middle of the second, but erupted for four runs in the second, four more in the fifth, and three apiece in the sixth and seventh to right the ship and earn the seven-run win.
Ashlie Aguilar, Chloe Belicek, Allison Kubena, Camryn Rios, and Layla Salazar notched three hits apiece.
Aguilar drove in four runs. Kubena and Salazar each delivered three RBIs. Belicek and Ryan Rangel each drove in two, and Rangel went 2-2. Rios also drove in a run, and Belicek scored three times.
Four of the Patriots’ runs were unearned off four Seguin errors.
Madyson Schultze picked up the complete-game win in the circle, allowing four earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts in seven frames.
Seguin (1-0) competes in the New Braunfels-Canyon tournament this Thursday – Saturday.
