(Seguin) – The Padilla Poll honored Seguin High School seniors Ian Box, Henry Cheek, and John Michael Mata with spots on its newly released All-State football team for Class-5A Division I.
Box, a defensive end and Lamar University signee, and Cheek, an offensive lineman, were named to the All-State First Team.
Mata, an inside linebacker, was named to the Second Team.
Box finished with career totals of 165 tackles, 20.5 sacks, and 55.5 tackles for loss. He was a defensive cornerstone on Seguin teams that made the UIL playoffs in each of his three varsity seasons.
Mata averaged 7.9 tackles per game to lead the Matadors as a senior last fall. He also recorded 8.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery.
Cheek was a senior leader on an offensive line that helped the Matadors average 310.5 yards per game and five yards per carry on rushing plays.
The All-State trio helped the Matadors go 6-5 and earn the program’s fourth consecutive UIL playoff berth in Craig Dailey’s first season as head coach.
