Residents invited to log in miles during Walk-N-Talk Wednesdays

Residents invited to log in miles during Walk-N-Talk Wednesdays

(Seguin) — Forget about trekking across the Lone Star State via a car, bus, train or airplane. That’s because you can begin to log the 832 miles across Texas during the Seguin Public Library’s hosting of the Walk Across Texas Program – a program dubbed locally as Walk-N-Talk.

Assistant Library Director Silvia Christy says “New Year. New Start. New Steps” is the motto that the library has selected as it helps residents take the required steps toward healthier living. Christy says although the free eight-week program started last week, there is still plenty of time for all residents to get started.

She says each Wednesday, residents are invited to the library at either 10 a.m. or 5:30 p.m. to submit their miles either as a team or individually.

“People still have a chance to register and record their first week of participation so as a group, people form a group of eight or less, but the goal is to walk the distance between one point of Texas to the other in eight weeks. Hopefully, some people will finish the whole width and come back mileage wise or it’s a good challenge between the groups and it encourages people to be active, to be outside, to have some activity….”

It’s part of our health program series that we tend to do throughout the year so hopefully, we’ll get a lot of people registered,” said Christy.

Christy says although they already have a few groups, there’s always room for more participants. She says the Walk-N-Talks on Wednesday alone are a great way to log in most of those miles.

“Part of the event on Wednesday, we take a walk around Walnut Springs Park. We do a little bit about two miles if possible, so we try to do a little bit of activity throughout the day,” said Christy. “Depending on the weather, we might do some activities inside.”

Christy says prior to each walk, an instructor will be on hand to talk about healthy choices and provide any guidance that someone might have on walking.

Logbooks and other essentials needed for the program are available for pickup at the library. There is no cost to participate in the program.
