Annual Veterans Art Show opens Today

Seguin Art League to host rotating art show in Schertz

(Schertz) – Area veterans these next two days will be inviting community members to step into their world of art. An array of art pieces and collections will be on display during The Seguin Art League’s annual Veterans Art Show. This year, the rotating art show, will be hosted at the VFW Post 8315 in Schertz.

Show Chairman Roger Betschler says each year, the show gives veterans this much deserved platform in which to share their creativity with others.

“Five years ago when we started this, we just wanted to do something for the veterans and this was a nice way for an art league to help those who are veterans, who also have some artistic incline to show their work because a lot of times, veterans don’t get the opportunity to show their creative side and the other thing that I am finding too with veterans is it is a lot of self-expression from their years of service and how they are being treated within the community today,” said Betschler.

Betschler says the exhibit will be open today and Saturday from 1 to 8 p.m. He says opening and closing receptions will follow each night, respectively, beginning at six o’ clock.

Serving as the guest speakers for the opening reception will be Nancy Russell, the Guadalupe County Veterans Service Officer and Dolly Arambula who will be sharing more about her late brother and Veteran Ray Gaitan who had a deep passion for art.

This year, Betschler says the Seguin Art League is especially excited to close out the show will another pair of great speakers.

“I am really excited with our speakers on Saturday night because we have Jeff Messinger from the American Legion here in Seguin and he’s got a strong passion and then the second speaker is Mario Lopez and he suffered some severe injuries in Afghanistan but man, he is a go-getter, and both these men are go-getters. It’s going to be awesome to listen to these two gentlemen,” said Betschler.

This year’s art show is also being made possible thanks to the Seguin Veterans Ministry, Woodman Chapter 3040, Mark Moy Professional Dance Instruction, HEB and the Guadalupe County United Way.

The VFW Post 8315 is located at 1000 FM 78 in Schertz.
