Navarro downs Cuero in four, claims share of 27-4A title
(Geronimo) – Navarro grabbed a share of the District 27-4A volleyball championship and moved into a first-place tie with La Vernia on Tuesday with a 3-1 home win over Cuero on the final night of the regular season.
The Panthers (29-11) and La Vernia both went 6-2 in district play and split their head-to-head meetings. The tiebreak procedure for the top playoff seed had yet to be announced at press time.
Navarro won the first two sets against Cuero 25-20, 25-11, dropped the third 25-22, and closed out the match with a 25-22 win in the fourth.
Elizabeth Williams led the Panthers offensively with 17 kills and made a big impact on defense with 17 digs. The team recognized Williams before the match for surpassing 1,000 kills in her high school volleyball career.
Berklee Andrews also collected 17 digs defensively. She and Taylor Helms each put away seven kills.
Hannah Rietz came up with eight kills, and Helms recorded two blocks.
Kate Wozniak distributed 20 assists, Tatum Harborth 11.
Terryn Wallace sent a team-high seven aces over the net and chipped in defensively with 12 digs. Harborth and Andrews each delivered four service aces.
Seguin ends volleyball season with road loss
(Seguin) – Seguin wrapped up the 2021 volleyball season with a 3-1 road loss to Alamo Heights on Tuesday in San Antonio.
The Matadors lost the first set 25-13, won the second 25-22, and dropped the third and fourth 25-19, 25-16.
Reese Brittain scored eight points on seven kills and an ace. She also totaled 15 assists and nine digs.
Julie Kocian and Regan Schmidt each put away six kills. Tresalyn Roberts contributed two solo blocks and a block assist. Ashlie Aguilar served for two aces.
The Matadors went 4-12 in District 26-5A to finish with a final season record of 17-22.
Marion volleyball concludes season with five-set win over Luling
(Marion) – Marion finished up the 2021 volleyball season on a positive note Tuesday night with a 3-2 “Senior Night” win over Luling in the MHS gym.
The Bulldogs won the first set 25-16, but the Eagles came storming back to win the next two 25-19, 25-15. Marion staved off elimination 25-17 in the fourth set and won the fifth and deciding set 15-10.
Jaslyne Williams and Hayley Mabee paced Marion’s front row with 10 kills apiece. Mabee also recorded 17 digs and delivered five service aces. Williams contributed 12 digs and four aces.
Kyla Beck collected a team-high 23 digs. Kacee McClendon set for 28 assists. Beck and McClendon each sent four aces over the net. Maggie Rudisaile made an impact up front with three blocks.
Marion finished fifth in District 26-3A with a 7-7 district record to log a final season mark of 15-21.
