Local park to get new basketball court

(Seguin) — A neighborhood park is about to get a major upgrade to its basketball courts. The Seguin City Council on Monday approved the installation of the new courts at Manuel Castilla Park on North Guadalupe Street.

Parks and Recreation Director Jack Jones says he’s excited about this project.

“This has been a long time coming for that park. When I first started here in 2013, the asphalt courts were wavy and I think the waves  have gotten more and more — you can surf out there now. But, it’s time for a new basketball court and we bid this out — it’s the exact same basketball  court that you see at Park West today with concrete, goals, LED lights, the exact same thing but now it’s going to be constructed where the old court was. If you drive by Manuel Castilla and Park West, that basketball court you see is being used just as much as anything out there. So, I’m excited about this and it will be well received by the community. I’m excited about this,” said Jones.

Jones says this will be another updated feature in Castilla Park. He says they also recently installed some lighting in that park that allows for more recreational opportunities.

“We did install four lights out there in the open play area. I remember last year, the football teams came in November and December and said ‘hey, we really need lights.’ So, the lights are up and have been well received by tackle football and flag football and folks that are playing out there,” said Jones.

The city approved the expenditure of $119,000 for the construction of the new basketball courts and LED lighting in that area. Jones says the court will be slightly elevated to allow for better drainage in that area.  The project was unanimously approved by the council.
