Baseball, softball fields back on the table tonight for Seguin ISD

Baseball, softball fields back on the table tonight for Seguin ISD

School district to consider moving forward with sale of old Saegert properties

(Seguin) – The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees is expected to consider taking the next step in the possible construction of a new baseball and softball stadium at Seguin High School. During its last meeting, trustees learned of a request for new and/or improved ball fields.

The fields currently include the baseball program facilities at the city of Seguin’s Smokey Joe Field and the softball field located on the south end of the high school campus. The request was brought to the table by Craig Dailey, new athletic director, and head football coach. The desire for improved and safer ball fields was also publicly echoed during that meeting by several parents and community supporters.

Tonight, the school board is set to consider the approval of a contract with PB Group, LLC for Design Services of a Seguin ISD Baseball and Softball Complex. District officials note that in March 2019, design services were previously solicited and approved to Pfluger Associates, LP. However, no contract was ever executed. Since then, they say the Seguin ISD has “enjoyed a good working relationship with Pfluger Associates, LP over the course of several projects.”

They say during that partnership, Pfluger has hired PB Group as its associate architect and has proven worthy in moving forward with the firm if approved tonight by the school board.

Tonight’s action would allow the district to select PB Group and “negotiate a contract for a fair and reasonable price.”

Another pair of aging facilities will also come to the table tonight. The board of trustees is slated to consider and possibly adopt a resolution approving the negotiation of the sale of old Saegert Middle School tennis courts and maintenance buildings to the city of Seguin.

District officials say the properties located next door to each other at 418 W. Mountain St. are “in disrepair and are not currently needed by the district for instructional purposes.” They say the buildings are “in fair condition, due to age, condition and construction.”

The Seguin ISD tonight is also scheduled to wrap up its budget process with the adoption of its tax rate for 2021. That rate includes $0.8996 for maintenance and operations (M&O) and $0.385 for Interest and Sinking (I&S). This makes up a total combined rate of $1.2846 per $100 valuation and does not exceed the no-new revenue tax rate.

District officials say not only is the proposed rate $.0768 lower than the prior year but that they are confident it will support the proposed budget for the coming school year.

The meeting gets underway at 6:30 p.m. today in the Seguin ISD Board Room located inside of Oak Park Mall.
