(Seguin) – Two of the most prolfic offensive players in Matador football history are taking their talents to Belton.
Seguin seniors Micah Rodriguez and Marques Washington finalized their commitments to NCAA Division III and American Southwest Conference powerhouse Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday during a signing event in the SHS Student Activity Center gym.
As the Matadors’ starting quarterback last fall, Rodriguez earned MVP honors in District 12-5A-Division I after throwing for 2,500 yards and a single-season school record 35 touchdown passes.
Rodriguez knows the competition for playing time will be fierce for Coach Pete Fredenberg’s Crusaders, a perennial conference champion and national title contender, and he relishes the opportunity to embark on that journey with Seguin classmates Washington and kicker Garrett Stiles.
“I always feel like I’ve been competing my whole life, so I’m not scared to go into a championship program and be a part of something great, and just work my way up, because I’ve been doing that my whole life,” Rodriguez said. “Marques, obviously, and Garrett are coming with me too, so it would be cool just to probably team up there again, and hopefully win another championship at Mary Hardin-Baylor.”
Rodriguez is undecided on a major at this point.
Washington, a multi-year All-District running-back, scored 20 total touchdowns last fall and ran for 1,324 yards, the most in a single season by any Seguin player this century.
The versatile speedster scored 15 times on the ground and caught five touchdown passes to go with 406 receiving yards. He played in the San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game earlier this year at Heroes Stadium.
Washington echoes the sentiments of Rodriguez in embracing the competition that awaits at UMHB.
“Stepping on campus, I knew automatically that this fits for me,” Washington said. “I know how to compete. I know how to compete with all of these upcoming athletes that are coming in my grade, and I’m just ready to get on to the next chapter.”
Washington is undecided on a major, but is leaning toward kiniseology.
