(Seguin) — The batter has been stirred and the cakes have been baked. Dozens upon dozens of homemade baked goods will be up for grabs thanks to the Guadalupe County Relay for Life Committee and this year’s participating teams. The group today will be hosting a Mothers’ Day Bake Sale at El Ranchito Restaurant.
Committee member Barbara Behal says the bake sale which has always been a success during Valentine’s Day was moved until this weekend. She says the group felt that things are now much safer to host the day long sale.
“It is part of the whole Relay, the committee and the teams. We all bake and we all bring goodies to the El Ranchito. Normally, we have it at Valentine’s Day and we feel like it’s a good time to have the bake
sale right now. We are going to have cakes, pies, cookies, cupcakes, a little bit of everything and we do not price it. It’s a free will donation. One year, we made $3,000 from the bake sale because people
are very generous in this community,” said Behal. “And for baked goods, we do not accept something that somebody has bought someplace because I feel like if I want to buy something at one of our local
stores, I can go buy it. If I go to a bake sale, I at least want something that is baked at home,” said Behal.
Behal says hosting the bake sale also reminds the community that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the plight to fight cancer goes on. She says the bake sale is just one of the latest efforts to raise money for cancer research and prevention.
“Plans are that there will be a Relay for Life in 2021 in September, hopefully, the 11th. We are not exactly sure how it will look but it will be different from previous Relays. We are going to do everything
in our capability of having it outside, not inside for COVID — even though a majority of us have been vaccinated, we still want to take precautions and of course, if the situation changes, our plans have to
change,” said Behal.
The Relay for Life Mother’s Day Bake Sale will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at El Ranchito Restaurant. The sale will continue until sold out.
