TLU baseball splits doubleheader with Our Lady of the Lake, weekend series vs. Trinity cancelled
(Seguin) – Texas Lutheran and Our Lady of the Lake each captured a baseball win Tuesday afternoon at TLU’s Katt-Isbel Field with the Saints taking the early game 2-1 and the Bulldogs capturing the second game 5-2.

TLU’s overall record now stands at 7-5 overall. OLLU is now 12-9 overall. The doubleheader was a non-conference affair between the Bulldogs, out of the NCAA Division III, and the Saints, out of the NAIA.

In the early game, four OLLU pitchers limited TLU to four hits. Joey Baker picked up the win in relief. He improved to 1-2. Baker went 3-1/3 innings and did not allow a run.

Tyler Vivier drove in the winning runs with a two-run double in the fourth. TLU had taken a 1-0 lead on a Cole Irby RBI in the first.

In game two, Simon Scales hit his first home run as a Bulldog to give TLU a 2-1 lead in the third. The two-run shot sailed over the wall in left field.

Scales drove in three runs. He also had a sacrifice fly in the fourth, when TLU scored three more runs.

Irby had two more hits for TLU in the second-game win. Austin Colon also had two hits. He added a run scored and an RBI.

Caleb Maly was 2-for-2 with a run scored, an RBI, and a double.

Logan Fisher recorded the win in relief. He improved to 2-1. Fisher went two scoreless innings and struck out two.

This Friday and Saturday’s Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series against Trinity has been cancelled due to Covid-19 safety precautions and protocols. The Bulldogs and Tigers have no plans to reschedule the games at this point.

TLU is back in action next Tuesday, March 23, in a non-conference home game against Concordia Texas at 6:30 p.m.

Texas Lutheran Softball splits road doubleheader at UH-Victoria

(Victoria) – Texas Lutheran Softball registered a 7-5 loss and an 8-0 five-inning victory Tuesday afternoon on the road against the University of Houston at Victoria.

TLU’s overall record stands at 9-4 after the two non-conference games. UHV, out of the NAIA, is 4-10.

In game one, TLU jumped out to a 4-0 lead after five innings, but the Jaguars put up five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead, 5-4.

The Jaguars scored two more runs in the sixth.

TLU scored a run in the seventh and had the go-ahead run at the plate, but UHV stopped the Bulldogs’ scoring threat to secure the win.

In game two, the Bulldogs scored a run in the first and then four runs in the third.

Haley Padilla hit a two-RBI single in the third, and TLU scored a pair of runs on errors.

TLU added a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to put the run-rule in play.

Sydney Ouellette kept UHV scoreless in the fifth and completed the three-hit shutout. She improved to 4-2 on the year.

Ouellette struck out one, walked one, and surrendered just three singles.

Rebecca Snow went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Casey Martin was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Padilla produced two hits and scored twice, and Chassety Raines and Laura Hernandez each had two hits. Hernandez drove in a run.

In the early game, Kelly Jurden, Martin, Snow and McKay Bloxham each had two hits. Bloxham drove in a pair of runs. Martin had two steals.

TLU has added a non-conference home doubleheader against Texas A&M-San Antonio to the schedule next Wednesday, March 24 at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The Bulldogs return to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play next Friday and Saturday, March 26-27, with a three-game series in Sherman, Texas against Austin College. The first game of Friday’s doubleheader starts at 6 p.m. Saturday’s single game will start at 11 a.m.
