Tuesday 3-16 High School Baseball/ Softball Recaps

Seguin, TX, USA / Seguin Today

Cougarettes hand Matadors second straight district loss, Friday game at Boerne-Champion to air on KWED
(Seguin) – Seguin landed on the short end of a 16-11 slug-fest against New Braunfels-Canyon on Tuesday afternoon in the fifth game of the District 26-5A softball slate.

The Matadors connected for 15 hits, but the Cougarettes topped that number with 17.

Canyon’s short game execution and speed on the bases kept constant pressure on the Seguin defense. The Cougarettes scored six unearned runs on three Matador errors.

“You can talk about all the errors, but if they’re not putting the bat on the ball, it doesn’t happen, so you’ve got to give them credit,” Seguin head coach John Garcia said. “They put the bat on the ball. Swinging, short game, everything. They do put a lot of pressure on you, and we didn’t handle that very well at the start of the game, but we kind of came back and settled down a little bit.”

Canyon scored single runs in the first and second innings, added two in the third, erupted for six in the fourth, and tacked on another in the fifth to build an 11-3 lead.

The Matadors plated four runs in the sixth to draw within four, 11-7, but the Cougarettes responded with five in the top of the seventh, including a two-run homer by Catherine Kuhn, to go up 16-7. Seguin scored four more in the bottom of the seventh. Canyon starter Bella Mitchell recorded her 10th strikeout of the afternoon to end the game.

Taylor Springs went 4-4 with a double and three runs scored to lead Seguin at the plate.

Graylyn Salazar finished 3-4 with four RBIs. Jaley Cardenas drove in two runs. Allie Mize collected three hits, two runs, and an RBI. Layla Salazar tripled to finish 2-5 with with two runs and one driven in. Ashlie Aguilar and Allie Kubena each had a base hit and a run scored. Aguilar drove in one, and Mia Cevallas scored twice.

Garcia complimented his team for adjusting to Mitchell after struggling early and battling until the final out after falling behind by eight runs.

“We started hitting the ball and making them make errors, and we scored some runs,” Garcia said. “We just came up a little short.”

Starting pitcher Madyson Schultze lasted 3-2/3 innings, allowing 10 runs (five earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

Reliever Kendall Hurt replaced Schultze in the fourth and pitched the rest of the way. She gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits with a strikeout and a walk.
