(Seguin) – Senior quarterback Micah Rodriguez was named the Most Valuable Player in District 12-5A-Division I to lead a group of 23 Seguin football players who earned recognition on the All-District team.
Rodriguez threw a single-season school record 35 touchdown passes in 2020 while completing 75 percent of his attempts for 2,500 yards and running for four scores.
The Matadors landed five offensive players and six defenders on the All-District First Team. The offensive list, all seniors, includes running-back Marques Washington, receiver Tristan Moreno, utility player Alex Concepcion, center Daniel Gonzales, and kicker Garrett Stiles.
Washington ran for 1,324 yards, the most in a single season by any Seguin player this century. He added 406 receiving yards and scored 20 total touchdowns – 15 rushing and five receiving.
Moreno pulled in 69 receptions and broke single-season school records for receiving yards with 1,185 and touchdown catches with 15. He also ran and threw for a score.
Concepcion finished the season with 38 catches for 437 yards and four touchdowns.
Gonzalez helped grate the road for an offensive that averaged 52 points and 506 total yards per game, and a staggering 8.1 yards per snap.
Stiles went 56-60 on PAT kicks and 4-4 on field goals with a long of 44 yards.
Seguin’s First Team selections on defense include junior linebacker Allen Martinez, junior defensive end Ian Box, freshman defensive tackle Evrin Contreras, senior safety Kory Saenz, junior safety Michael Cornelius, and junior cornerback R-Teston Tucy.
Martinez recorded a team-high 92 tackles to go with 10 tackles-for-loss, three sacks, and a fumble recovery.
Box led the Matadors with 9.5 sacks and 16 tackles-for-loss while producing 59 total tackles and recovering two fumbles.
Cornelius collected two interceptions, a fumble recovery, two tackles-for-loss, and 77 total tackles.
Saenz totaled 57 tackles. Tucy added 41 tackles with an interception and a fumble recovery.
Contreras finished his first season of varsity football with 41 tackles, four tackles-for-loss, a sack, and a fumble recovery.

The Matadors’ Second Team All-District honorees on the offensive side include senior linemen Branden Knox, Marco Montemayor, and Martin Ramirez, along with senior fullback Michael Martinez. Martinez produced two rushing touchdowns and two TD catches while serving primarily as a lead blocker in the running game.
Seguin’s Second Team selections on defense include junior linebacker John Michael Mata (2 Int., 3 forced fumbles) and sophomore linebacker Brychan Dilworth (2 fumble recoveries).
Matadors who made the All-District Honorable Mention list include junior receiver Kai Seidenberger (16 rec., 206 yds., 4 TD), senior offensive lineman Harris Franz, senior tight end Kaleb McCann (8 rec., 93 yds., 1 TD), junior running-back Jerivan Contreras (403 total yds., 4 TD), and sophomore defensive tackle Jayden Franklin.
Seguin landed 30 players on the Academic All-District team, the most in Travis Bush’s five seasons as head coach, and seven on the Academi All-State list.
Academic All-State honorees include Rodriguez, Knox, Moreno, Franz, Stiles, Louis Flores, and John Leandro.

The 2020 Matadors finished 7-3, won a share of the District 12-5A-Division I championship for the second time in three years, and earned the program’s third consecutive playoff berth this past season.
