Families invited to mark calendars for Buck Fever in December

(Seguin) – Families will get to enjoy a part of the holiday season by also enjoying the great outdoors at this year’s 35th Annual Buck Fever. Unlike other events that were forced to cancel this past year, Buck Fever committee members say they postponed the event to this month. They felt that the two-day event, which is normally held in October, could safely be hosted with a few modifications.

The event is being planned for Wednesday, Dec. 9 and Thursday, Dec. 10 at the Seguin Events Complex.

Committee Member Tammy Bargfrede says it was especially important for the group to host the event on its 35th anniversary.

“We hated to see a special year go by — a momentous 35 years of Buck Fever and not be able to have the show. We did postpone the show from October to December because of the capacity numbers. Back in October, we could only have 50 percent and so now, we can have 75 percent,” said Bargfrede.

As for some of those modifications, Bargfrede says the committee is planning to utilize more of its fundraising space outside so that it can safely host more of its fun activities.

“We’ve made a few modifications as to how we are setting up the activities for the event. We normally have a fence around the Coliseum and the dance slab, and we have two entry points. This year, we are going to encompass the gazebo area, the outdoor area, around the two buildings as well so that we can have a lot more attendees and more open air for people to be,” said Bargfrede. “We are going to have entry points, one into the Coliseum and one into the dance slab and we will have to keep track on numbers going in and out of those two buildings. The city has guidelines on the number of people that can be in the building at each time. At this point, it’s at 75 percent capacity,” said Bargfrede.

Luckily, Bargfrede says many of the traditional events hosted at Buck Fever are still being planned. She says the group is even adding something new to its Thursday line-up.

“We are still having our 30-gun raffle. We are still having the bucket drop raffles. We are still having our horns contest. We are having the presentation by Gator Country on Wednesday evening and that’s being sponsored by GVEC. We will be having the fish tank. We weren’t’ sure if we were going to get to do that but we are going to have the fish tank and that is being sponsored this year by Quarter Moon Plumbing. We are having on Wednesday a scavenger hunt. We’ve been doing a scavenger hunt for the past few years. This year, we are doing it a little bit differently. It’s going to be a photo scavenger hunt for some prizes. On Thursday, we are adding something. We are going to have Country music singer Gabe Garcia. He was the finalist several years ago on Nashville Star and he’s going to be entertaining folks in the Coliseum. We’ve never had an entertainer before, but we thought it might be a nice idea to bring someone in and just change things up a little bit. Also, it’s our 35th anniversary, something a little special to add to the 35th year,” said Bargfrede.

Bargfrede says their hope is that people will jot down next week’s event on their calendars. She says not only is it a fun event but it’s an important one. She says Buck Fever promotes the great outdoors all while raising funds for several youth organizations in Guadalupe County.

“So many of our supporters enjoy the event and although as much as it is an event to come and bring your family and have a good time, it’s also very much a fundraiser and we needed to find a way or continue to have a way to raise funds for the organizations that we support,” said Bargfrede.

Of course, Buck Fever wouldn’t be Buck Fever without its annual Whitetail Horns Contest. Entries for the contest will be accepted on Tuesday, Dec. 8 from 6 to 9 p.m. and again, on Wednesday, Dec. 9 from 7 to 11 a.m.

Cost to enter is $6 for adults and $3 for students. Children age six and under are free. Tickets for the annual 30 Gun Raffle can also be purchased in advance. Cost is $10 a ticket or six for $50. Raffle tickets are available from any Buck Fever director or by calling Daniel Boenig at 830-305-4148.
