(Seguin) – Seguin High School graduate Mikey Hernandez will play college baseball in his hometown after signing with Texas Lutheran University on Tuesday.

Hernandez, who pitched and played shortstop at SHS, was a three-year varsity player and two-time All-District selection during his memorable career with the Matadors.

On the mound, Hernandez was 2-1 with a 0.875 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 16 innings before his senior season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the plate, Hernandez hit .388 with 10 RBIs, 14 runs scored, and seven extra-base hits over the course of 15 games.

Hernandez went 8-2 with a 1.31 ERA as a junior in 2019 and helped Seguin make the playoffs for the first time since 2014 in Dusty Brittain’s first season as head coach.

Hernandez has known TLU head coach Greg Burnett since childhood. He and Burnett’s son Drew were Seguin teammates and have played together dating back to their Little League days.

Hernandez joins a TLU program that returns the bulk of its nucleus from the 2020 team that was 9-4 when the season was cancelled.

The Bulldogs won the SCAC championship and the Spokane Regional of the NCAA Division III championship before advancing to the finals of the D3 World Series in 2018. TLU was the SCAC runner-up and hosted an NCAA Division III regional in 2019.
