(Seguin) — After months of meeting, pouring over maps and evaluating enrollment numbers, the Seguin ISD rezoning committee is looking to propose its two new revised elementary school attendance zone maps for community input. The maps are what are used by the district to determine what schools your kids will attend. It’s all based on where you live.
Sean Hoffmann, Seguin ISD chief communications officer, says this work, however, comes after the school district has been somewhat fortunate to have operated under the same attendance boundaries for the past 9 to 10 years.
“The drawback to that is that we have not sustained growth that would necessitate us to redraw those boundaries. There is impending growth and we do have campuses that have a disproportionate number of students compared to some of our other campuses and mainly at the elementary levels. So at this point, we’ve realized that it is time to get community input on what these new attendance zones will look like,” said Hoffmann. Hoffmann says district officials believe the Rezoning Committee has worked hard in evaluating the attendance zones and drawing up these new boundaries.
“Over the past couple of months, we have had community members, parents, employees who reside within the district attend evening meetings and essentially look at our current attendance zone boundaries and really work hard in looking at the numbers and look at the streets and affected areas where we could possibly shift some of those attendance zone boundaries in order to better distribute our students and also prepare for future growth within our schools,” said Hoffmann. Hoffmann says the district just realized that it was time to revisit the school zones and give the public a say in the future.
“Many districts with heavy growth, they are redrawing boundaries every three, four, five years and again, it’s time for us to look at that. We’ve created an opportunity of Feb. 26 where the community is invited to visit Seguin ISD District Office at 1221 E. Kingsbury from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and then again in the evening from 4 to 7 p.m. to look at a couple of proposed maps that has some attendance boundary changes on them as well as look at some of the numbers — look at the data, look at the figures that show what our current enrollment is at our campuses and what some of these changed up boundaries would look like if they were to go into play right now and what those numbers would look like when we make those changes,” said Hoffmann.
Again, Hoffmann says the maps won’t be official until the community gets the chance to look them over and after the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees officially votes on them.
“Again, we are still in the planning process and as folks come in on the 26th and provide their input, we will then share that input with our board of trustees and look at it this spring further. Should there be any changes made, we want to make sure that we get those changes approved and publicized this spring before we start school in the fall,” said Hoffmann.
The maps will be on display on Wednesday, Feb. 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Seguin ISD District Office located at 1221 E. Kingsbury St.
