(Seguin) — The renovation and construction of new facilities in the Seguin ISD begins tonight. The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees has called a special meeting to officially consider and canvass the election returns declaring the results of the May 4 Seguin ISD Bond Election.
During the election, voters approved the district’s request for a $64.7 million facilities bond issue. A total of 1,569 ballots or 66.2 percent of votes were cast in favor of the bond package, while 799 votes were cast against it.
The outcome of the election now gives clearance for the district to begin planning for the approved projects.
Those projects include the $39 million for total renovation of A.J. Briesemeister Middle School; $17.3 million for the rebuild of Matador Stadium at Seguin High School; $3.9 million for renovations at Jefferson Avenue Elementary; $1 million for the land purchase of a future McQueeney Elementary School; $1.8 million for ADA playscapes at each elementary school and $1.7 million for district wide campus improvements such as drainage and HVAC.
Due to timing, the school board tonight is also expected to get a jumpstart on the rebuild of Matador Stadium. The agenda tonight allows for the board to adopt the resolution approving the design plans for the new SHS stadium.
The approval of the design plans also includes the possible selection of a construction delivery method. They also give trustees the opportunity to identify weighted criteria to be used in selecting a contractor as well as delegate authority to the superintendent or “his designee” to take necessary actions to procure construction services.
Prior to the bond election, the district had already taken some steps in aligning some of its stadium plans. District officials say in order to provide an estimated cost value and to ensure that the stadium project would be ready as soon as possible, the district had to begin some of those plans in advance.
The special meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. today in the Seguin ISD Board Room located inside of Oak Park Mall.
