City of Seguin accepting applications for Public Safety Youth Academy

(Seguin) — High school students considering a career in public safety again have the opportunity to learn from Seguin’s finest. Applications are now being accepted for the Spring 2020 session of the City of Seguin’s Public Safety Youth Academy.

“The academy is an opportunity for high school students interested in careers in public safety to learn from our officers and firefighter/EMTs,” said Courtney Toliver, City of Seguin Human Resources Employment Specialist. “Students can expect hands-on learning rather than lecture alone. Over the years, the program has learned that students really enjoy this type of setting,” said Toliver.

Instruction of the free 10-week course is split between the Seguin Police and Fire Departments. Students will receive lessons on K9 handling, rope rescues, use of force training involving simulation, utilizing live fire hoses and other topics. Applicants must be high school students with good attendance who are in good academic standing. Priority is given to seniors. Class size is limited to 10-15 students to maximize personal interaction.

“Not only is this a great opportunity for students considering careers in public safety to receive quality hands-on education, it’s a great opportunity for our police and fire departments to make positive connections with the community,” Toliver continued.

Applications are being accepted until December 20. The academy is scheduled to begin January 23 and end on April 9, 2020. Those interested in applying should contact Courtney Toliver at (830) 401-2473 or ctoliver@seguintexas.gov. Complete requirements are available with the application.
