Sheriff’s office debunks social media posts about headless bodies

Seguin, TX, USA / Seguin Today

(Seguin) — Don’t believe everything on social media. That is the lesson being delivered to the public today by The Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s officials say they are debunking the latest rumors on social media that reportedly have them investigating the discovery of “headless bodies.”

Sgt. Zach McBride says the sheriff’s office is not investigating any incidents of headless bodies or any other recently reported homicides. He says in the past two days, several concerned citizens have called in — in reference to the “alarming Facebook post” that was seen on the closed group “Residents of McQueeney.”

McBride says this false information was reportedly compounded by the presence of EMS and Sheriffs Deputies in the area of Terminal Loop on Monday.

McBride says the presence of emergency vehicles in that area was in response to the death of a local resident who died of natural causes. McBride says foul play is not suspected in this incident. That incident, however, caused several concerned citizens to call in to see if the information was true and if there was any ongoing threat to residents in the McQueeney area.

McBride says this particular rumor has the sheriff’s office reminding the public that using social media as a sole source for news often leads to the spread of false or misleading information and ask that individuals cross reference anything they see on social media with another credible source such as Seguin Radio KWED and the Seguin Daily News before making any decision as to its authenticity.

They say comments on Facebook groups or any other social media without verified facts should be considered as opinion or speculation until proven otherwise.

Those with concerns in reference to this information are asked to contact Sgt.McBride at 830-379-1224.
