(Seguin) — The Texas Lutheran University community is mourning the loss of two student-athletes killed in an off-campus vehicle accident early Monday morning in Seguin.
University officials have identified the students as junior A’Jean (A.J.) Augustine, 20, of Allen, and senior Deyreck Dean, 23, of Rockwall.
According to the Seguin Police Department, officers responded to the single-vehicle crash at approximately 2:38 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, in the 1900 block of State Highway 46 North.
Police say a 2012 Kia Sorento was traveling southbound on Highway 46 at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control. The vehicle crossed into the northbound lanes and struck a guardrail.
Both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.
In a statement released Monday, TLU described Augustine and Dean as beloved members of the university community, saying the impact of their loss will be felt for a long time.
The university waited until both families had been notified before publicly announcing their deaths.
The Seguin Police Department also extended its deepest condolences to the families, friends and the Texas Lutheran University community.
The crash remains under investigation.
