Car show remembers Seguin educator, raises money for trade scholarships

(Seguin) — This Sunday, the family of Steve Garcia Jr. will continue his legacy with what he loved the most cars and helping young people.

The Steven Garcia Jr. Memorial Car Show is set for Sunday, Nov. 1, at the Seguin Coliseum. The show begins at 10 a.m., with a door prize giveaway at 11 a.m. and awards presentation at 2 p.m.

Garcia’s niece, Stefani Trevino says the event honors a man who spent much of his life sharing his knowledge and helping students find their way.

Born and raised in Seguin, she says Garcia spent 25 years teaching at Seguin High School. He initially taught mechanics before moving into welding education. Outside the classroom, he was a car enthusiast who built vehicles from the ground up, entered car shows and raced at San Antonio Raceway.

“He helped kids as anyway possible, whether that be providing shoes, clothes, school supplies,” said Trevino.

That spirit of helping others continues through the annual fundraiser, which directs all proceeds toward scholarships for students pursuing trade careers.

“In the past two years, we’ve raised $6,000 to give scholarships back to trade students,” said Trevino.

Vehicle registration will be available on the day of the show. Participants can begin arriving at 9 a.m. to set up. Entry fee is $35 a vehicle. Each registered vehicle will receive a ticket for a chance to win a door prize.

Categories include classic and modified cars and trucks, motorcycles, muscle cars, imports, hot rods, lowriders, custom paint and more. The event also will feature food trucks, vendors, a raffle and a 50/50 drawing.

Trevino says children’s activities have also been added to the event.

“We have plenty of things to do for the kids,” said Trevino. “A train ride, bouncy house, just a whole lot of fun for the family just to enjoy a day out to see some cars.”

The show will also feature a Best in Show trophy created by Randy Flores, one of Garcia’s former students.

The Seguin Coliseum is located at 950 S. Austin St.
