Making school history: Matador Band headed to state competition

(Seguin) — The Seguin ISD is sharing more on its state bound Matadors. The district is proud to announce that its Seguin

High School Mighty Matador Marching Band will perform at the 2026 State UIL Marching Band Championships in San Antonio.

The contest is set for Monday, November 2, at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The band is scheduled to perform in the preliminary round at 11 a.m. Bands that qualify for the final round will perform on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

This marks the band’s first state appearance in 24 years, and its second trip to state in school history.

“There is so much more behind this accomplishment than what audiences see on the field,” said Superintendent Dr. Jack Lee. “There are early mornings, late nights, countless repetitions, and an unwavering commitment to one another. These students and directors have earned every bit of this opportunity. They have made history for Seguin High School, and I couldn’t be prouder. I can’t wait to watch them take the field at State. What a great day to be a Matador!”

Nearly 200 band and colorguard students from grades 9-12 are part of this year’s show, “Tides of Temptation.” The band earned its spot at the State competition through strong performances at the UIL 5A Area H Marching Band Contest on Oct. 24. The Matadors placed 5th in the Area preliminary round before finishing 4th in the finals.

“Our students and staff have worked incredibly hard on this show,” said Fine Arts Director Dr. Samuel Parrott. “This historic achievement is a testament to their abilities and their hours of practice.”

The Mighty Matador Marching Band is led by David Witherspoon, Director of Bands; Aaron Beaver, Assistant Band Director; Garrett Iler, Assistant Band Director; Eric Medina, Director of Percussion; and Heather Brown, Director of Colorguard. Linsey Rios, Mickey Zukerman, John Blair, Kameron Ridgeway, Sarah Jandt, Travis Sutton, Juan Sanchez, and Jeremiah Barrera supported the marching band this year.

The community is invited to see the band’s final home performance at the last home football game of the season on Friday, Oct. 30, at Matador Stadium. Kickoff is 7 p.m. The band will perform after the game. Plans for an official band sendoff to State are also underway. Details will be announced later.
