BOERNE — Seguin found a few chances to interrupt Boerne Champion’s offense Friday night. Finding a way to keep its own offense on the field proved much more difficult.

The Matadors managed just two first downs before halftime, while Champion averaged only three plays per touchdown drive in the opening half, sending Seguin to a 57–7 loss at Boerne ISD Stadium.

One week after beating Lockhart 21–14, the Matadors couldn’t sustain the offensive rhythm that helped deliver that victory. All six of Seguin’s first-half possessions ended with punt attempts, including one blocked out of the end zone for a safety, as the Chargers built a huge halftime lead.

Champion established its big-play threat immediately. Ryder Flugence connected with Zachary Lopez for 74 yards on the game’s opening play. Flugence then delivered a low touchdown pass to the far-right side of the end zone, where Axton White secured the ball near the ground. Just 27 seconds into the game, Seguin was already trailing. Flugence followed with rushing touchdowns on Champion’s next two possessions, helping the Chargers take a 21–0 lead through the first quarter. He finished the night responsible for four touchdowns, throwing for one and rushing for three.

Seguin’s defense did create opportunities to change the direction of the game. The Matadors recovered a first-quarter fumble and also stopped Champion on downs in the red zone. But neither stop produced the offensive response Seguin needed to cut into the deficit. Instead, the gap widened in the second quarter. Seguin’s first punt attempt of the period was blocked out of the end zone for a safety, and Champion running back Caleb Farias added two rushing touchdowns before halftime.

Farias scored three consecutive rushing touchdowns for the Chargers during the game, providing another finishing threat alongside Flugence. For Seguin, the first-half numbers told the story: six possessions without a score, only two first downs and a Champion offense repeatedly reaching the end zone without needing lengthy drives.

The Matadors struggled to establish enough possession to relieve the pressure on their defense. Seguin’s breakthrough finally arrived late in the fourth quarter.

The Matadors traveled 65 yards in five plays, finishing the drive with a Daniel Pinon rushing touchdown with 5:28 remaining. The score was Pinon’s 10th touchdown of the season and sixth on the ground, helping Seguin get on the board at 50–7. Champion answered almost immediately. Backup quarterback Julian Navarrete found Finn Adams for a 56-yard touchdown pass with 5:08 left, completing the scoring just 20 seconds after Seguin’s touchdown.

The defeat left the Matadors with a clear set of issues to address: sustaining drives, limiting explosive plays and protecting their punt operation. Their defensive stops offered chances to gain traction, but Seguin couldn’t connect those moments with productive possessions until the outcome had long been decided.

Seguin now enters an open week before its scheduled return to Matador Stadium against Smithson Valley on October 30th at 7 p.m.
