New fire station planned for Seguin’s growing north side

New fire station planned for Seguin's growing north side

(Seguin) — A new fire station is coming to one of the fastest-growing areas in the city of Seguin.

The city has hired Byrne Construction Services to serve as the construction manager at risk (CMAR) for its new Fire Station No. 4. The new fire station is slated to be built near Huber and Rudeloff roads on land donated to the city by the developers of the master-planned Walnut Springs subdivision.

Fire Chief Garrick Herbert says having a construction manager at risk means the city should get the best overall price for the project.

“We elected to use a construction manager at risk format to build this fire station because we believe it delivers the best value for the citizens and for the city. And in a nutshell, what that means is we will begin designing a fire station.

Then we will bring on a contractor to help us get through the rest of the design phase. And what that really prevents is us coming up with a concept in our head or something that’s really cool, that we can’t afford. And so, by bringing in the contractor and the architects and the team and the city staff to go from here forward, it keeps our projects appropriate and on budget,” said Herbert.

If the name Byrne Construction Services sounds familiar, it should.

Byrne was also the construction manager at risk for the construction of the Seguin Public Library.

Byrne’s South Texas President Tony Battle says they are pleased to be part of the new fire station project.

“At Byrne, 85 percent of our work is municipal work. We are defined by buildings that really define communities. And so just like the library — I think it’s a jewel of this community and we’re very proud of it — this will also be a building that serves this community very well,” said Battle.

The project has a construction budget of $7 million, but Byrne will now be responsible for providing the city with a guaranteed maximum price for the completed fire station.

This will be the city’s first fire station located north of Interstate 10, an area that has seen significant residential and commercial development.
