TLU express lessons in service

Students take part in annual H.O.T. Dogs Day of Service

(Seguin) — Nearly 200 Texas Lutheran University students recently spent part of their Saturday giving back to the Seguin community.

On Sept. 19, the students took part in the university’s H.O.T. Dogs Day of service.

H.O.T. stands for “Helping Others Together.”

Tracy Donley, TLU director of communications and content says each year, TLU students get an opportunity to step away from the classroom and “put the university’s emphasis on servant leadership into action.”

“They really show up and give their time and energy to a wide range of local volunteer projects,” said Donley. “It really underlines the university’s commitment to volunteerism and teaching students about the concept of servant leadership through firsthand experiences.”

Donley says students spent the morning doing hands-on work such as cleaning, planting, building or just lending a hand wherever they were needed.

“I think that it turns out that the people who volunteer get as much out of the experience as the people who they’re helping,” Donley said. “There are so many profound lessons that can be learned by reaching out and spending time and helping others.”

The fall H.O.T. Dogs Day included projects at locations throughout Seguin and the surrounding area, including community gardens, churches, senior housing, nonprofit organizations and other community projects.

TLU holds H.O.T. Dogs Days twice a year –once in the fall and once in the spring.
