SEGUIN, Texas — The #RV Texas Lutheran men’s soccer team fell to No. 14 Lynchburg, 2-1, on Friday night at Gustafson Field in the 2026 home opener.
The Hornets (2-0), who made the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2025, scored the opening goal in the fifth minute of play, before the Bulldogs (0-2) responded in the 12th minute. The game stayed even for the majority of the match before the Hornets netted the game-winner in the 83rd minute.
After falling behind in the fifth minute, freshman midfielder Alex Isaacson (Round Rock/Round Rock) netted his first career goal to equalize in the 12th minute. Possession was even throughout the first half as the two sides went into halftime at 1-1.
Sophomore Ernesto Avila (Houston/Humble) made a number of crucial saves to keep the match tied throughout a barrage of second half shots from the Hornets. However, Lynchburg went ahead in the 83rd minute to secure the victory.
Lynchburg outshot TLU 21-5 with an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal and held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore Luis Briseno (San Antonio/Madison) led the TLU attack with two shots, both on goal.
Friday’s match marked the first-ever meeting between TLU and Lynchburg. Overall, the Bulldogs are 0-1-1 against Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) competition.
Up next, Texas Lutheran returns to Gustafson Field on Sunday, Sept. 6 to continue a three-match homestand against Texas A&M-Victoria. Kickoff is set for 1 PM. The match will be streamed on FloCollege. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
