(Seguin) — Two major issues facing Seguin’s growing community will return to the City Council on Tuesday night, including a development plan that could pave the way for a new Walmart Supercenter on the city’s northwest side.
The council is expected to again consider a general land use plan for approximately 180 acres along State Highway 46 at the proposed Pecan Parkway. The project includes a mix of residential and commercial developments, with approximately 34 acres being considered as the site of a Walmart Supercenter.
Council members delayed action on the request two weeks ago after learning during the meeting that Walmart was potentially involved in the project. Several council members and nearby property owners said they had not previously been aware of the proposed store and wanted more time for public input. The council is expected to hold a public hearing on the land use plan tonight before again considering the proposal.
Also returning to the council tonight is the city’s proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Council members got their first detailed look at the spending plan during a workshop last week. City officials say the budget attempts to balance the demands created by Seguin’s rapid growth with revenues that have not kept pace with the increasing cost of providing city services. The proposed general fund budget includes funding for employee pay increases, a limited number of new positions and the creation of a community paramedic program.
Tonight, the council is also expected to formally propose a property tax rate of 52.94 cents per $100 of valuation. That would be 1.59 cents higher than the city’s current tax rate and 0.94 cents above the No New Revenue Rate.
Tuesday night’s Seguin City Council meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at Seguin City Hall.
