HALLETTSVILLE, Texas—For the second consecutive season, the Marion Bulldogs are heading to the Texas high school football playoffs under head coach Joel Call.

But before the Bulldogs can officially turn their attention to the postseason, there’s still one important piece of business left to handle.

Marion travels to Hallettsville on Friday night for its regular-season finale, where the Bulldogs and Brahmas will square off with second place in the district standings on the line.

Both teams enter the contest with identical district records, giving Friday’s matchup plenty of significance beyond simply closing out the regular season.

For Call, reaching the playoffs in each of his first two seasons leading the Bulldogs represents another important step in building the program. However, the Marion head coach is quick to remind his players that qualifying for the postseason is only the beginning of what they hope to accomplish.

“It’s just one of our goals that we’re trying to accomplish every year,” Call said. “First of all, make the playoffs. We break everything up into three seasons. Your preseason is season one, regular season is season two and then season three is the playoffs.”

That third season has become familiar territory for Call, whose coaching background includes time with the tradition-rich Judson Rockets.

His experience with a program accustomed to postseason appearances has also given him an appreciation for the work required to consistently compete for playoff opportunities.

“If you’re not careful and appreciate it, you get spoiled and you just take it for granted,” Call said. “These opportunities to be in the playoffs with the caliber of teams that we’ve played in our district, that’s an honor.”

However, Call believes that honor comes with a responsibility to make the most of the opportunity.

“We can’t squander it, we haven’t arrived. The season’s not over,” he said. “We’re checking a box, but there’s other boxes to check too.”

Call believes Marion has developed greater consistency with the defense emerging as one of the team’s strongest assets heading into the final stretch.

“Our defense is playing at a super high level,” Call said. “Our defensive coaches and our defensive players are really doing a good job.”

That improvement, combined with a greater emphasis on taking advantage of opportunities and maintaining an aggressive approach throughout games, has helped Marion put itself in position to compete for one of the district’s top finishes.

Still, the Bulldogs know Friday’s trip to Hallettsville will require one of their strongest performances of the season.

Marion has encountered its share of difficult challenges away from Veterans Stadium and the Brahmas present another formidable obstacle.

Call is familiar with the Hallettsville program after the two teams met in a preseason scrimmage last year.

“They’re disciplined. They play hard. They’re aggressive. They’re physical,” Call said. “It’s going to take us playing our ‘A game’ to come out and have the results that we want to.”

The matchup also provides something Call believes is especially valuable at this point in the season: a meaningful game immediately before the playoffs.

Rather than closing the regular season with little at stake, Marion will have an opportunity to fight for second place while sharpening its execution against a quality opponent.

“This is exactly what you want the last game of the year to look like,” Call said. “You want it to have some meaning, and it does. We’re fired up for this opportunity.”

Call also understands the challenge of keeping a team of teenagers focused on the task at hand without allowing the magnitude of the moment to become a distraction.

“You want the game to mean something, but you don’t want to overhype,” he explained.

That’s why the Bulldogs’ approach this week remains consistent with the message Call has emphasized throughout the season: focus on Marion, continue improving, and let the results take care of themselves.

There are still areas the Bulldogs want to clean up before entering postseason play, particularly when it comes to protecting the football, preventing explosive plays and maintaining consistency in the kicking game.

“Eliminate turnovers and big plays, offensively and defensively, and that we’re continuing to be solid on [kicks] and consistent in our special teams,” Call said.

Those details could prove especially important against Hallettsville, where the difference between finishing second or falling further down the district standings could come down to a handful of possessions.

For Marion, Friday’s game represents both an opportunity to finish the regular season on a high note and a chance to establish momentum heading into the playoffs.

The Bulldogs have already accomplished one of their primary goals by securing another postseason appearance.

Now comes the opportunity to demonstrate just how far they’ve progressed since the season began.

And while another playoff berth is worth celebrating, Call’s message remains clear.

The Bulldogs aren’t finished checking boxes yet.

Marion and Hallettsville meet Friday night with second place in the district standings at stake and the postseason waiting just around the corner.
