Ballot items continue to draw Texans to early voting polls

(Seguin) — Early voting decisions continue to be made in Guadalupe County and across the state of Texas. Voters will be making decisions involving city government, local school districts, county offices, the Texas Legislature and Congress.

Statewide, voters will decide races for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and other state offices, along with a U.S. Senate seat.

The governor’s race features incumbent Greg Abbott and Democratic challenger Gina Hinojosa.

The race for Lt. Governor features longtime incumbent Dan Patrick and Democratic candidate Vikki Goodwin.

The U.S. Senate race features Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico.

Guadalupe County voters will also help decide the race for the newly redrawn 35th Congressional District featuring a race between Republican Carlos De La Cruz and Democrat Johnny Garcia.

In the Texas House District 44 race, it’s a rematch from two years ago, between Republican incumbent Alan Schoolcraft and Democratic challenger Eric Norman.

Locally, Seguin ISD voters will decide Proposition A, a Voter-Approval Tax Ratification Election, or VATRE.

The measure would shift two cents from the district’s debt service tax rate to its maintenance and operations tax rate.

District officials say the total tax rate would remain unchanged, while the move would generate additional funding for local schools.

Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Jack Lee says, like all their decisions, they try to do what’s best for kids and the VATRE is being offered to voters with that in mind.

Navarro ISD voters will choose four school board members from a field of five candidates. The candidates include Jared Gallini; Noah Webster; Kristen Green; Hillarie Forister and Incumbent Dan Reinhard.

In the city of Seguin, voters living in City Council District 5 will decide between Chris Aviles and Forest Fletcher.

There’s also a contested race for Place 2 on the Guadalupe Appraisal District Board of Directors, featuring Peggy Herman and Charles Kelm.

Voters are reminded that not all races and propositions will appear on every ballot. Their choices will depend on where they live.

Residents are encouraged to review their sample ballots before heading to the polls.

Early voting continues through this Friday and the polls this week will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.

Sample ballots, polling locations and additional election information are available through the Guadalupe County Elections Office.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3.
