(Seguin) — Seguin is getting ready to go nuts this Saturday during the 21st annual Pecan Fest to be held downtown and at other various locations across the city.
Blaire Friar, director of Destination Seguin, says the free festival celebrates Seguin’s pecan heritage while giving residents and visitors a chance to explore local businesses and attractions.
“We just really want to see people come out and enjoy our community, support our businesses, support these local vendors that come out,” said Friar.
More than 100 vendors, food trucks, a kids’ zone and pecan shelling contest will be part of Saturday’s festivities. To help make room and for a safer environment, Austin Street will closed between Court and Washington streets.
Live music downtown will include Keen Country Band at 10:30 a.m., Kayla Jane at 12:30 p.m. and Selena tribute band Bidi Bidi Banda at 2:30 p.m.
Friar says other highlights include a food truck competition featuring pecan-inspired dishes, interactive games in the Pecan Country Chiropractic Fun Zone such as Whack A Mole and Lumberjack Axe Throwing.
Friar says the celebration extends beyond the downtown festival, with activities showcasing Seguin’s history and agricultural roots.
The Big Red Barn will host its annual Pecan Fest activities, including farm animals, hayrides, demonstrations and a chance to see the World’s Largest Pecan. Sebastopol House will feature the Wilson Pottery Show, while the historic Magnolia Hotel and Seguin Heritage Museum will welcome visitors for free open houses.
“It really becomes a citywide celebration for the weekend and includes a free shuttle connecting downtown with the Big Red Barn and Sebastopol House,” said Friar.
Friar says the festival wraps up at 4 p.m. giving folks plenty of time to catch a break for their return of this year’s Hats Off to Juan Seguin Pub Crawl which gets underway downtown at 6 p.m.
Pecan Fest weekend continues Sunday with the Saints Alive Riverside Cemetery Tour. The $20 tour is set for 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
