Matador Theatre Friday night brings Halloween fun and frights to SOLC

(Seguin) — A little Halloween magic, a few spooky surprises and plenty of student creativity will come together Friday night as Seguin High School’s Matador Theatre program hosts its first Halloween Bash and Haunted Forest at the Irma Lewis Outdoor Learning Center.

The idea came together through a partnership with the Outdoor Learning Center, where manager Pete Sylvius had been looking for an opportunity to collaborate with the school’s theatre program.

Lydia Robles, Seguin High School theatre teacher, says the event has resulted in giving students an opportunity to take their classroom creativity into a new setting and build an event of their own.

The Halloween event will offer family-friendly activities beginning at 6 p.m., followed by a haunted forest experience starting at 8 p.m.

She says the event is designed to give families an evening of Halloween fun while also showcasing the talents of Seguin High School theatre students.

“We were able to put our heads together and we all got really excited about doing a Halloween event with the haunted forest,” said Robles.

The evening’s activities will include Halloween character meet-and-greets featuring familiar favorites such as Peter Pan and Ariel, games, concessions and classic Halloween movies shown on a big screen. Families are encouraged to bring blankets and settle in for favorites such as “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.”

Guests also can enjoy s’mores around the fire pit and encounter Edgar Allan Poe, who will be walking around reading poetry and favorite Halloween stories.

As the sun sets, Robles says the event will shift toward its more frightening side, with the haunted forest opening at 8 p.m. She says visitors will encounter original characters and scenarios developed by students in the school’s advanced theatre class, along with some recognizable Halloween figures lurking among the trees.

“It is truly, they are putting this whole thing on,” said Robles. “It’s their production, so it’s very, very cool.”

Admission is $10. Those who bring a canned good will receive $1 discount to enter the Haunted Trail.

Food donations will go to the Christian Cupboard.

Gates open at 6 p.m., and the last entry is at 10 p.m. Cash and card payments will both be accepted at the gate.

A link to purchase tickets online can be found on the Seguin ISD Facebook page.
