GERONIMO, Texas — The Navarro Panthers have a brand-new stadium, an offense firing on all cylinders and plenty of reasons to celebrate heading into homecoming weekend.

But after hanging 68 points on Pearsall in their district opener, head coach Glenn Hill wants his players to understand that the best part of their season could still be ahead of them.

Navarro returns to Panther Stadium on Friday, October 16, to host the San Antonio Memorial Minutemen in its first district home game at the new facility.

The Panthers enter the matchup riding the momentum of a 68-14 dismantling of Pearsall last Friday, a performance that showcased just how dangerous Navarro’s offense has become.

“Really efficient night offensively,” Hill said during this week’s Panther Report. “We were able to spread the ball around with some different guys.”

Running backs Julius De Leon and R.J. Pates helped establish a punishing ground attack, while Brody Zoeller, Drew Mundine and Emerson Elder provided playmaking ability on the perimeter.

Quarterback Eli Baker also continued his emergence as a dangerous passing threat, throwing four touchdown passes for the second time this season.

But while the offensive explosion stole the headlines, Hill believes the most important contributions came from the other side of the football.

Navarro’s defense held Pearsall without a first down until late in the first half and surrendered just 25 rushing yards for the entire game.

The Panthers also blocked two punts, repeatedly giving their offense favorable field position and opportunities to pile on the points.

“Maybe the biggest factor to that was our defense,” Hill said. “We were living the life of having some short fields, and that helps out a lot.”

The performance highlighted the confidence of Navarro’s defensive front seven, whose ability to pressure opponents has allowed Hill to trust his secondary in one-on-one coverage.

Meanwhile, the offensive line has quietly put together one of the team’s most impressive accomplishments.

Through six weeks of football, Navarro has yet to surrender a sack.

“They take a ton of pride in not letting Eli get hit,” Hill said. “A lot of that’s the offensive line knowing their assignments and working together.”

That protection has allowed Baker to develop greater confidence in the pocket, knowing he can work through his progressions without constantly worrying about incoming pressure.

Hill believes that trust, combined with Navarro’s talented group of receivers, has helped transform the Panthers into a more versatile offensive threat.

“When you feel like you can drop back and truly scan the secondary and not worry about things up front, that allows you to be a dangerous player,” Hill said.

For a Navarro program that finished 3-7 last season, the turnaround has already produced a significant milestone.

The Panthers have earned four victories, surpassing last year’s win total, and opened District 15 competition with a victory.

However, Hill isn’t interested in celebrating regular-season milestones just yet.

“We’re fighting for our playoff lives, just like everybody else in our district,” Hill said. “As long as we can be on the better side of that, I like our odds.”

That pursuit continues against a San Antonio Memorial team entering Friday at 1-5 following a 58-12 loss to Cuero.

Despite the Minutemen’s struggles, Hill sees a disciplined defensive unit and several offensive players capable of producing explosive plays.

One player in particular has captured Navarro’s attention.

Memorial’s Josiah Rodriguez is a versatile athlete who lines up at receiver, running back, wildcat quarterback and safety, giving the Minutemen multiple ways to get the football into his hands.

“Regardless of the scheme, I know when he’s got the football in his hands, he’s really dangerous,” Hill said.

Navarro’s defensive approach will center on maintaining its tackling fundamentals and preventing Memorial’s playmakers from breaking loose.

“We’re not going to be a team of arm tacklers,” Hill said. “We got to be sound on defense.”

Friday’s matchup also carries significance beyond the district standings.

It will be Navarro’s first district game inside the new Panther Stadium, which officially opened September 25 with a 34-17 victory over Marble Falls.

The facility, capable of accommodating approximately 7,000 spectators, represents a major upgrade from the Panthers’ longtime home at Erwin-Lee Field.

The inaugural game drew an enthusiastic crowd, and Hill expects another electric atmosphere as the community returns for homecoming.

“We’re fired up, and our kids are fired up,” Hill said. “We thought that first home game here really brought some energy to us.”

Homecoming festivities will include a parade, pep rally and Saturday dance, but Hill has emphasized the importance of keeping his players focused on Friday’s assignment amid the celebrations.

That’s a message the Panthers have embraced throughout the season.

“Monday practice is Monday, Tuesday’s Tuesday, and we’re not going to worry about Friday till Friday,” Hill said.

Even after a 54-point victory, Hill has found areas for improvement, including cleaning up holding penalties and continuing to sharpen the team’s execution on special teams.

Those details could become especially important as Navarro prepares for the heart of district competition, which includes a road trip to Cuero next Friday.

For now, the Panthers have an opportunity to build on their dominant district debut and give their homecoming crowd another memorable night inside their new stadium.

A year ago, Navarro finished its season with just three victories.

This year, the Panthers have already surpassed that mark, and with an increasingly explosive offense, a confident defense and a perfect district record to protect, they have their sights set on something bigger.

Navarro hosts San Antonio Memorial on Friday, October 16, at Panther Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
