SEGUIN, Texas — Texas Lutheran sophomore cornerback Malik Johnson (Paris/Paris) was tabbed the SCAC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday following his pair of pick-sixes last Saturday in the Bulldogs victory over Lyon.
This is his second SCAC weekly award of his career and of the season. The Bulldogs have earned Defensive Player of the Week honors in four of the five weeks this season.
Johnson recorded one of the most memorable single-game performances by a Bulldog in recent memory, bringing back two pick-six interceptions for touchdowns, one in each half, of Texas Lutheran’s win. Johnson is the first Bulldog since TLU became an NCAA institution to record multiple pick-six interceptions in a single game.
Johnson broke the Texas Lutheran single-season pick-six record with four in just five games this season. The record was previously held by Kyle McNally (3, 2011).
Following a bye week next Saturday, Johnson and Texas Lutheran will prepare to open SCAC play as the Hendrix College Warriors travel to Seguin on Oct. 17 in what will be a highly anticipated matchup following last year’s instant classic. Kickoff is set for 1 PM. The game will be broadcast on FloCollege. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
