James Fredrick Crump passed away on Monday, September 14, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 77. James was born to Tom and Helen Crump on September 11, 1949, in Seguin, Texas. He grew up on the Crump Ranch and graduated from St. James Catholic School and Seguin High School.
James earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from St. Mary’s niversity. While pursuing a master’s degree in business at the University of Texas at San Antonio, he worked for the San Antonio Water System. After completing his education, James returned to Seguin and joined his parents in the family business, Crump Lumber. He expanded the lumberyard by adding
an Ace Hardware store, continuing the family business’s long-standing service to the community. Crump Lumber served Seguin for more than 60 years. In 1998, James opened a second Ace Hardware and Lumber store in San Antonio. Both stores closed in the early 2000s. Although business was an important part of James’s life, his greatest pride was his family. He treasured his daughters, Jennifer and Shannon, and was deeply proud of the women they became.
James shared special moments with his daughters that became lasting memories. He taught Shannon how to drive a stick shift—a practical lesson that became a cherished memory. James was proud of Jennifers career and enjoyed attending events where she
provided professional lighting, including the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. James also cared deeply about the community he called home. He volunteered during the early years of Agri-feast, Christmas in the Park, and the Pecan Festival—events that remain part of the community today.
He was particularly proud of his work with the Guadalupe County Pecan Growers Association and the Seguin/Guadalupe County Chamber of Commerce. Through their partnership, the organizations planned, financed, and carried out projects that promoted Seguin and Guadalupe County while highlighting the importance of the pecan industry and the area’s agricultural heritage.
For 12 years, the organizations operated a financially successful booth at the Folklife Festival in San Antonio. The booth was the first at the festival to win two first-place awards in each of its first two years. The partnership also helped establish the Pecan Museum, which was fully incorporated in the State of Texas. The museum concept came to life when it merged with the Red Barn becoming part of the agricultural museum, preserving an important piece of the region’s history.
James is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Crump and Shannon Crump, and their mother, Susan Crump. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Theresa Crump; his nieces and nephews, Kim Morris, Valerie Bushmelev, Jon Crump, and Wade Ohnheiser; and his cousins, Celia and Kaybeth Williams.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Helen Crump, and his brother, Thomas Crump.
A memorial service will be held Friday, October 2, 2026, at 2:30 p.m. Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park Cemetery 2951 TX-46
