SEGUIN, Texas — After a record-breaking performance against Austin College on Saturday, the Texas Lutheran football team claimed two of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference’s (SCAC) three weekly awards on Monday.
Texas Lutheran running back Johnathan Pompey (Killeen/Shoemaker) was named Offensive Player of the Week and safety Adrian Sanchez (Glen Rose/Glen Rose) took home Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Pompey accounted for 74 yards on the ground and three touchdowns, both career-highs, on twelve carries on Saturday.
Sanchez spearheaded a record-setting performance from the TLU secondary, tallying a career-high three interceptions to go along with three tackles. On the day, the TLU defense recorded a program-record seven interceptions against the ‘Roos. Sanchez finished one interception short of matching Vernon Fewell’s single-game record of four interceptions set in 1962 set against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi. Sanchez is currently tied for the national Division-III lead with four interceptions on the season and is second in interceptions per game (1.33).
The weekly honors are firsts for both sophomore Bulldogs.
