Christa “Chrissy” Ruth Koenig, lovingly known to all as Chrissy, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2026, surrounded by her family. What a glorious reunion awaited her in heaven, where she was welcomed into the loving arms of those who had gone before her.
Chrissy was born on February 11, 1953, in Austin, Texas, to Bertha (Young) and Horace Fohn. She grew up in Rockne, Texas, surrounded by the love of her parents and older siblings, and the joy of belonging to a large, close-knit extended family. Chrissy treasured sharing stories of her childhood, from the nuns at Catholic school to playing kick the can with her cousins. A gifted student, she excelled academically, even skipping the fourth grade. During her years at Bastrop High School, she participated in many activities and especially enjoyed cheerleading, which brought her treasured memories and friendships that lasted a lifetime.
During high school, Chrissy met the love of her life, Jim. Even before she graduated, she convinced her parents to take her to South Carolina to visit him while he was completing Army basic training. Chrissy and Jim married in 1972 and soon made their home in McQueeney, Texas, where they spent more than 43 years working side by side at McQueeney Mill Feed Store raising their family and building a beautiful life together.
Chrissy was an amazing cook who found great joy in reading and collecting cookbooks, watching cooking shows and feeding the people she loved. Her kitchen welcomed family and friends to meals ranging from enchiladas to étouffée – and just about everything in between. She delighted in preparing dishes and sharing stories that paid homage to her Cajun roots. She was also an avid movie lover; there was seldom a movie Chrissy had not seen, she took joy in talking about each film, always ready to share her thoughts or favorite moment.
Of all the roles Chrissy cherished throughout her life, being “Mimi” to her five grandchildren was among her greatest joys. Each summer, she hosted “Cousin Camp” at her home, filling the days with fun and creating memories for the four boys and one girl who absolutely adored her. Her love of cooking, movies, storytelling, The University of Texas, and, above all, family lives on through each of them.
Chrissy was preceded in death by her son, Drew Zachary Koenig; her parents, Bertha and Horace Fohn; her brothers, Larry Fohn and wife Cherry, and Kenneth Fohn and wife Glenna; her sister, Gwendolyn Fohn Till and husband Felix; her brother-in-law, David Fiebrich; and her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Juanita and Fred Koenig.
Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 53 years, James “Jim” Koenig; her children, Brittany Hanna and husband John, and Josh Koenig and wife Amy; her grandchildren, Hudson, Cortland, and Berkeley Hanna, and Jacob and Jase Koenig; her sister, Elberta Fiebrich; her brothers-in-law, Fred Koenig and wife Jeanie, Johnny Koenig and wife Loyce, and Bill Koenig and wife Tammy; her sisters-in-law, Pat Vick and husband Roy, Teresa Pesquera and husband Luis, Kathy Walleck and husband Erwin; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of dear friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 18, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel in Seguin, followed by a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., with Deacon Alvin Frerich officiating.
Funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockne, Texas at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 19th, 2026. A reception will follow in the Old Fellowship Hall. Private interment will be held later at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Rockne.
Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Hendrix, Chad Hendrix, Verlin Callahan, Fred Koenig, Johnny Koenig, Randy Till, Mark Till, Paul Till, Jeff Fiebrich, Tim Fiebrich, Greg Fiebrich, Chris Fiebrich, and Colten Jenkins.
Memorial contributions in Chrissy’s honor may be directed to the Mays Cancer Center in San Antonio, Texas, or the Texas Game Warden Association.
Chrissy’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the caring staff at Mays Cancer Center, the radiology team at UT Health San Antonio Multispecialty and Research Hospital, and the compassionate caregivers who supported Chrissy in her home. Their kindness, care, and support throughout the last two years meant more to Chrissy and her family than words can express.
