(BUDA, Texas) — The Seguin Matadors learned the hard way what mistakes can do against a great team.
Visiting Class 6A Buda Hays Consolidated, the Matadors were overwhelmed in a 54-0 loss to the Hawks at Bob Shelton Stadium.
After deferring the opening kick, Seguin’s defense busted through to sack Hays quarterback Nate Roland for its first sack of the year. The huge play forced Hays to punt away its opening possession and gave Matador fans confidence in what the night could hold.
Instead, senior wideout Ayden Avila had the punt bounce off his shoulder, and Hays recovered at the Matador 33. Momentum was hard to find from that point on.
Two plays later, 2025 first-team all-district running back Gabriel Peach scored his first touchdown of the night from 14 yards out.
From there, the game fell into a routine.
Seguin would go three-and-out, and Hays would hammer home another score.
The reason? Hays loaded the box with veteran talent and overwhelmed Seguin’s young offensive line.
After Peach’s first trip to the end zone, Hays ran over Seguin for three more offensive touchdowns before halftime. To add salt to the wound, Seguin starting quarterback and varsity newcomer Matthew Hoblin had the ball jarred free by Hays defender Landry Richason before defensive tackle Kiefer Patterson fell on it in the Matador end zone for another six points.
Still, Seguin managed to force and recover a fumble by Roland after he was hit by Matador bandit Nate Walters with three seconds left in the first half.
By halftime, Hays led 34-0. The Hawks would end the night with five different touchdown scorers.
The final stats weren’t easy to swallow.
Seguin finished with only two first downs and three total yards. Senior Daniel Pinon proved to be the Matadors’ most effective player on the night, finishing with a pair of strong kickoff returns and six carries for a team-high 10 rushing yards.
Hays finished the night with nearly 600 yards of offense, most of it earned on the ground. That damage featured 7 offensive touchdowns, including 6 running scores. Peach and backup QB Christian Salazar finished with a pair of scores.
The loss drops Seguin to 0-2 and wraps up the Matadors’ non-district schedule.
Seguin makes its way home next Friday to host the Manor Mustangs.
