(Seguin) — It was a long opening night for the Seguin Matadors, who had to wait through a lengthy lightning delay before finally taking the field at Matador Stadium.
New Braunfels defeated Seguin 38-7 in the season opener Friday night.
KWED Sports Director Reily Chestnut and Coach Dan Hernandez had the call. Chestnut wrapped up the night during the Reyes Law Firm Postgame Show.
“We didn’t think this game would actually continue, but man, oh man, it was one long ride to say the least. On the opening night of Matador Football’s 2026 season, they fight to get the game played after it was delayed with just two minutes and 58 seconds left in the first quarter. And over two hours later at 10:20 p.m., we start the thing again and well, New Braunfels got the result they wanted. They take down the Seguin Matadors 38-7 to open the 2026 season, as New Braunfels now has won 13 straight Guadalupe River Bowls,” said Chestnut.
The Matadors will look to bounce back next week, with that game also airing live on KWED.
Weather also disrupted opening night for the Marion Bulldogs. Their game was postponed by lightning and moved to Saturday morning at Bulldog Stadium on the Texas Lutheran University campus. Kickoff is set for 10:30 a.m.
Elsewhere, the Clemens Buffaloes defeated San Antonio Roosevelt, 50-22.
The Smithson Valley Rangers were also scheduled to open their season against Cinco Ranch, but that game was canceled because of the weather.
