(Seguin) — Want a seat on the Seguin City Council?
Seguin residents interested in serving on the City Council have until 5 p.m. today, Monday, Aug. 17 to file for one of four seats up for grabs this November.
The four seats on the November ballot are currently held by Jim Lievens District 3, Paul Gaytan District 5, Jason Biesenbach District 7 and Bill Keller District 8.
City Secretary Kristin Mueller says those interested will want to meet today’s deadline.
She says all filing must be completed by 5 p.m. today.
“We have District 3, District 5, District 7 and District 8 on the ballot this year,” said Mueller.
Mueller states that the city of Seguin operates under a single-member district system, with one council member representing each of the city’s eight districts. She says each council member also serves a four-year term and is limited to two consecutive terms.
Mueller says anyone interested in running should begin by obtaining a candidate packet. She says it’s still not too late to stop by and pick one up.
“They need to come in and pick up a candidate packet here at the city secretary’s office or it is available online on our website,” said Mueller.
To be eligible to campaign, Mueller says candidates must be a qualified Texas voter.
“They just need to be living in the district that they’re going to run in for 6 months or more in order to be eligible to be on the ballot for that district,” said Mueller. “They have to be 18. They can’t be a felon. That’s really the only requirements to be able to be on the ballot.”
The city’s general election is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 3. The filing period which began July 18 closes at 5 p.m.
The Seguin City Secretary’s Office is located at 205 N. River Street and is open Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those with questions may also contact the office at 830-401-2468.
