Man killed in early morning shooting in Guadalupe County; suspect arrested

(San Marcos) — A 32-year-old man is dead and another man is behind bars following an early morning shooting in Guadalupe County.

The Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were dispatched at approximately 1:58 a.m. Sunday to a report of shots fired in the 5000 block of Crossover Road in San Marcos. While deputies were responding, additional callers reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing a man lying in the driveway of a residence.

San Marcos police officers arrived first and found 32-year-old Sergio Raynaldo Mata suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Officers administered life-saving measures, but Mata was pronounced dead at 2:16 a.m.

Sheriff’s deputies later identified 21-year-old Miguel Angel Marquez as the person who allegedly fired the shots. Marquez was detained at the scene.

Investigators say several rounds also struck a vehicle and a home across the street. An adult man had been sleeping in the bedroom where the bullets entered the residence, but he was not injured.

Investigators with the sheriff’s office Criminal Investigations Bureau and a crime scene technician processed the scene and interviewed multiple witnesses.

Marquez was arrested and charged with murder and deadly conduct. He remains in custody at the Guadalupe County Adult Detention Center.

The investigation remains ongoing.
