(La Vernia) — A 16-year-old from a nearby high school was killed in a single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning.
According to the La Vernia Police Department, the crash occurred just before 4 a.m. Sunday in the 12,000 block of U.S. Highway 87 near East Chihuahua Street.
First responders arrived to find a 2015 Lexus RX350 rolled onto its side and engulfed in flames.
Police say the teenager, who was the vehicle’s only occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say the girl was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 87 when, for reasons that remain under investigation, she left the roadway, entered a grassy area and struck the brick “City of La Vernia” welcome sign before the SUV rolled over and caught fire.
The victim’s identity has not been released.
La Vernia ISD officials confirmed the teen was a student at La Vernia High School.
As classes began on Monday — the district offered its counseling services for students and staff.
In a statement, the district said its thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy and that campus teams are prepared to provide counseling resources, with additional support available through neighboring school districts if needed.
La Vernia ISD officials say their focus is on supporting students, staff and families while providing a safe and welcoming environment as the school year begins.
The accident remains under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
