Young anglers invited to catch some carp

(Seguin) — Calling all young anglers.  Local kids are invited to cast a line and learn the fundamentals of fishing during a pair of upcoming youth workshops being hosted by the Seguin Parks and Recreation Department.

The parks department is partnering with Seguin ISD and the Irma Lewis Outdoor Learning Center to offer both a Learn to Fish Workshop on Tuesday, Aug. 4, and an Advanced Fishing Workshop on Tuesday, Aug. 11.

Each session is open to students in grades 3 through 6, with separate classes for grades 3-4 and grades 5-6.

Nikki Berry, of the Seguin Parks and Recreation Department, says enrollment is intentionally kept small to ensure each child receives individual instruction.

“There is a cap for those classes, so sign up as soon as possible,” Berry said. “We’re going to take 12 participants on our Learn to Fish on Tuesday, Aug. 4, that’s for grades 3 and 4 and grades 5 and 6. We’re also hosting our Advanced Fishing Program on Tuesday, Aug. 11, for grades 3 and 4 and 5 and 6. We are taking 12 in each age group. It’s $5 a participant, and once again, that’s in partnership with Seguin ISD out at the Irma Lewis Outdoor Learning Center,” said Berry.

Berry says the workshops are designed to introduce children to fishing as a fun and accessible outdoor activity while teaching patience, confidence, environmental stewardship and safe fishing practices.

She says the city is exicted about this and other partnerships with Seguin ISD and the Irma Lewis Outdoor Learning Center.

“We had our community fishing event last spring. We’re planning on doing another one this upcoming spring. I’ve had nature camps. I’ve also had fishing workshops as well as just a bunch of different nature programs and classes,” said Berry.

Registration is now open, but parks officials  say families should sign up soon as space is very limited.

The cost is $5 per participant. Registration is available through the Seguin Parks and Recreation Department. The parks office can be reached by calling the department at 830-401-2480.
