Free Fishing Day set for this Saturday across Texas

(Austin) — Texans and visitors can fish without a license during Texas’ annual Free Fishing Day on Saturday, June 7.

The event allows anyone to cast a line in public waterways across the state without purchasing a fishing license. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department says the day is designed to encourage people to enjoy the outdoors and introduce new anglers to the sport.

TPWD officials encourage experienced fishermen to bring family members and friends along to share their knowledge and love of fishing.

The department also offers several resources for anglers, including fishing tutorials, information on local lakes and rivers, urban fishing locations, state park fishing opportunities and special events at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens.

While no license is required on Free Fishing Day, officials remind anglers that fishing licenses help fund conservation efforts, fish stocking programs, habitat improvements and public fishing access projects across Texas.

More information about Free Fishing Day and fishing opportunities throughout the state is available through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and at TakeMeFishing.org.

Anglers planning to fish in federal waters should note that a valid fishing license is still required for the private recreational red snapper season, which opened May 22.
