Teachers, counselors encouraged to sign up for Summer Externship

Educators to have behind-the-scenes access to local industries

(Seguin) –Since teachers and counselors are busy wrapping up the final days of school, the Seguin Economic Development Corporation is doing its part to make sure that they don’t forget to sign up for the Summer 2026 Industry Insight Experiences Externship Program.

The program which runs from June 2-4 will give educators from Seguin, New Braunfels, and Marion the chance to spend a day inside local companies, learning firsthand about the jobs, skills, and training needed in today’s workforce.

Jessica Dersen, workforce development manager for the Seguin Economic Development Corporation, says the experience will give educators a direct look at how local industries operate.

“So, the whole idea is they’re exposed to these companies. They spend time with management, HR, leadership, and other departments — so they can gain information about the career pathways, the skills and the education that are required in the industry,” said Dersen.

Dersen says teachers can then bring back that knowledge to their classrooms.

“And they then take that back to the classroom, and they can either develop a lesson plan and a presentation for their students. But ultimately, it gives them that direct connection with employers who may be hiring for summer internships or looking for opportunities where the employer can go in, speak to the students directly, and really get them excited about pursuing careers in their field,” said Dersen.

Dersen says there is a limited number of spots available for teachers throughout the area.

“We have 50 teachers and counselors, who we don’t want to forget that are participating. And they’ll be able to visit two companies in a one-day externship. And at completion of the externship, they’ll receive a $100 HEB gift card sponsored by HEB,” said Dersen.

In the meantime, Dersen says those interested are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible.

“There is a call to action for teachers and counselors. We are cutting off registration this Friday, May 15th. But if there are any teachers and counselors in the region that are interested in participating, there is a link. They can talk to their local CTE department or contact Seguin EDC. We are also still recruiting employers until May 15th. So, if there’s a local business that wants to engage with our local educators, they’re welcome to register by May 15th,” said Dersen.

The program is supported by H-E-B and is a collaborative effort involving the Seguin Economic Development Corporation, the New Braunfels Economic Development Foundation, local school districts, and the New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce.
