(Seguin) — Guadalupe County Commissioners got a festive surprise during last Tuesday’s meeting.
Commissioner Precinct 1 Jacqueline “Jackie” Ott with the help and encouragement of some county elected officials and staff members, took advantage of the Cinco de Mayo holiday by welcoming the sounds of the award-winning Seguin High School Matador Mariachi Band to the Guadalupe County Courthouse floor.
The performance was meant to serve as a special tribute to Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher and Commissioner Precinct 2 Drew Engelke, both of whom are stepping down at the end of the year.
Following the performance and their presentation of a banner marking the occasion, Kutscher shared his thanks for the musical surprise.
“Like Commissioner Wolverton said, definitely a first for Commissioners Court. What a fantastic surprise. Thank you everybody so much for doing that, Commissioner,” said Kutscher.
Engelke also expressed his appreciation and joked that the mariachi musicians were worth suspending the usual time limits.
“Thank you very much. I had leaned over to the judge and said I waived the five-minute limit for the citizens to be heard. No, quite a surprise. Thank you all very much,” said Engelke.
Ott also thanked Director Rafael Alarcón and the students for bringing the much-needed energy and celebration to the courthouse.
County leaders say the Cinco de Mayo surprise officially begins the “heartfelt sendoff’ for the two longtime county leaders whose last day is Dec. 31.
