(New Braunfels) — A conflict between the New Braunfels City Charter and the Texas Constitution is sending the city’s mayoral race to a runoff election.

City officials say the charter allows the mayoral winner to be decided by plurality, but the Texas Constitution requires a majority vote for offices with terms longer than two years. Because no candidate earned more than 50 percent of the vote in the May 2 election, top vote-getters Michael French and Neal Linnartz will advance to a runoff.

City officials say they are now working with election authorities to schedule the mayoral runoff alongside the District 6 New Braunfels City Council runoff.
