(Wimberley) — The Navarro Panthers open Class 4A Region IV area playoff play tonight against the Wimberley Texans, with first pitch set for 7 p.m. in Wimberley on KWED.
Both teams advanced to the second round on bi-district sweeps. The Panthers eliminated Pleasanton in two games, while the Texans swept Manor New Tech.
Navarro head coach Scott Elliott knows his team faces a stiff test.
“If you look at the polls, they’re going to be the prohibitive favorite to win our region,” Elliott said. “They won the region last year and have a lot of talent coming back. They’re a deep team, one through nine, and they have a deep pitching staff. They’re a quality team. So, if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best.”
Navarro will need strong pitching again after a dominant bi-district showing. The Panthers allowed just one run in two wins over Pleasanton. Sophomore Ryan Davidson threw a complete-game shutout in Game 1, a 12-0 Navarro victory. Junior Tyler Riske followed with a complete-game two-hitter to clinch the series with a 6-1 win in Game 2.
Tonight’s game starts at 7 p.m. in Wimberley. Game 2 shifts to the new Navarro High School on Friday at 7. And a Game 3, if necessary, will be held on Saturday at a time and place to be determined.
