(Seguin) — Now that municipal and school district elections are over, voters will soon head back to the polls to decide some key races appearing on the primary runoff election ballots.
The campaigning continues for the two men vying for the Republican nomination for the new Congressional District 35 seat. John Lujuan and Carlos De La Cruz both recently attended a meeting of the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court and introduced themselves to the community.
Lujuan is a current member of the Texas House and says his experience makes him the right choice for the job.
“As I’m learning the districts and coming to the different counties, Guadalupe, Wilson, Carnes County, I’m just amazed at the people and the industry and things that are going on here. I feel real advantaged, because as a state representative, I sit on the Texas Workforce Economic Development Committee, and I’m also chair of the International Relations Committee, where a lot of people come before us and wanting to do business in Texas. With those relationships and those things, I’ve just been blessed to be in the know of a lot of things. And I look forward (serving), and that’s why I’m here this morning. I just wanted to officially introduce myself, because most of you I know, but I just want to also let you know that I look forward to working with you on all the challenges that we have, but also all the great opportunities to make our place and make our state better and stronger,” said Lujuan.
De La Cruz is a businessman and says that he has the support of President Donald Trump.
“I’m in this race because I believe that we need a true conservative in Washington, not somebody who campaigns like he’s on the right, but governs like he has been on the left. Now, before my wife and I built a small business here in Texas, I served 20 years in the United States Air Force. And today, I’m fighting for the forgotten men and women of our community. You see, I grew up here in Texas. My family worked hard and they’ve stretched every dollar. So, when prices go up, we feel it. And the sad reality is that all our kids feel it too. And on top of that, our children are being bombarded by woke indoctrination where girls such as my teenage daughter are being forced to share bathrooms with biological men in this country. And boys, they’re just being told that they do not matter,” said De La Cruz.
On the Democratic ballot, there’s also a runoff for the congressional seat. Maureen Galindo and Johnny Garcia are vying for the Democratic nomination and the right to face the winner of the Republican nomination in November.
There will be one local race on the Republican ballot, as incumbent Stephen Germann and former Cibolo City Councilman Joel Hicks compete for the GOP nomination for the Precinct 4 seat on the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court. There is no Democratic candidate in this race, making the stakes particularly high for these two candidates.
Other closely watched races include the runoff for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate. Senator John Cornyn is locked in a battle with Attorney General Ken Paxton. The winner will go on to face Democratic nominee James Talarico during the November general election.
The joint Democratic and Republican Primary Runoff Elections are set for Tuesday, May 26. Early voting begins May 18.
